SSW #76 - King of the Ring: South Regional Round 1 (Miami, Florida) Ringmstrbracketsfinal-2

THE SOUTH REGIONAL – ROUND 1
Live from the America Airlines Arena in Miami, Florida

We see a skyline shot of South Beach in Miami at night that leads right into the King of the Ring promo.  We go inside the American Airlines Arena, where FWA announcer Molly Holly is at ringside and getting ready to kick off tonight’s action as the 1st round of the King of the Ring continues.  Molly runs down some of the stars theat we will be seeing in action tonight, as well as a big tag team grudge match as Hacksaw Duggan and Tito Santanna team up against Devastation Inc.

‘HOTSTUFF’ by Donna Summer hits and out comes RWA Champion Eddie Gilbert as we kick off the King of the Ring

(4) Eddie Gilbert (RWA) vs. (13) Terry Taylor (NAWE)
Great old school match to get us started tonight, with Taylor and Gilbert choosing to stick to the mat early on.  Taylor works the arm and gets in some good drop kicks, but a thumb to the eye gives Gilbert the advantage.  Taylor fights out of a reverse chinlock, hitting a series of slams that sets Gilbert up for the ‘5 arm’.  However, when Taylor comes off the ropes Gary Hart trips him, causing enough of a distraction for Gilbert to get a high knee to the back of Taylor.  Gilbert follows up with the Hot Shot to get the win.

(3) Yuji Nagata (HLW) vs. (14) Buff Bagwell (NAWE)
Bagwell comes out flexing and playing to the crowd, while Nagata is all business.  Yuji methodically attacks the legs at the onset, but Bagwell uses the slight power advantage to hit some high impact moves.  Buff misses the blockbuster, allowing Yuji to strike with a cross-arm powerbomb.  Buff manages to kick out, but Yuji goes right into the Nagata lock and gets the submission victory.

Break

(6) AJ Styles (SSW) vs. (11) Austin Idol (PWUSA)
Another evenly fought matchup sees AJ electrify the crowd with his high flying offense.  Idol tries to keep AJ grounded for most of the match, working on the lower back.  However, AJ manages to strike with the Pele.  AJ goes on the offensive, hitting several moves but unable to put Idol away.  Idol back drops AJ over the top rope, but he manages to land on the apron and strike with an enziguri.  He nails the Superman Forearm on the dazed Idol to get the 3 count!

IN THE BACK: Eddie Gilbert and Gary Hart are in the back, and Gilbert is complaining that he was the first match of the night.  He says that he is already the King, the only thing left to do is to give him the crown.

(7) Brad Armstrong (FWA) vs. (10) Tiger Jeet Singh (HIP)
Singh attacks Armstrong before the match even starts, and the ref has a hard time getting it under control.  Singh takes over on Armstrong in the early goings, locking on the stomach claw, but Armstrong fights out.  Brad hits some standing dropkicks, then scores a nearfall with a flying bodypress from the top.  However, Brad goes for a bulldog only to have Singh turn it into a back suplex, dropping Brad on top of his head.  Singh hits an Argentine Backbreaker, then locks on the Camel Clutch.  Brad makes it to the ropes to break, but Singh hits another Argentine backbreaker and manages to score the pin in a mild upset.

Break

(2) Greg Valentine (BTPW) vs. (15) Vampiro (FA)
Valentine is methodical in this match, grounding Vampiro and immediately going to work on the knee.  Vampiro puts up a fight, but his mobility is very limited.  He strikes with the 630 kick, but it is only enough to score a 2 count on Valentine.  Greg is able to nail Vampiro coming off the top with a big clothesline, then hits the wind up elbow drop.  He gets a 2, but only because he pulls Vampiro up.  This almost backfires because Vampiro is able to get him up for the Nail in the Coffin but the knee buckles.  Valntine locks on the Figure Four and cranks away, forcing Vampiro to submit.

(Cool Naomichi Marafuji (HIP) vs. (9) Vladimir Kozlov (HLW)
Matafuji uses his speed to stay away from Kozlov in the beginning, but eventually Kozlov is able to land a big clothesline that turns the tide in a heartbeat.  The Moscow Mauler brutalizes Marafuji, who strikes back with some stiff kicks that daze the big Russian.  Matafuji goes for the sliced bread, but Kozlov shoves him off over the top rope to the floor and he crashes hard.  Kozlov tries to press the advantage outside but Marafuji sends him into the ring post!  Back in the ring, Kozlov blocks the Sliced Bread again and goes for the Iron Curtain, but somehow Marafui is ale to reverse it and roll Kozlov up in a victory roll for the pin.

Break

(5) The Rock (WLW) vs. (12) Davey Boy Smith (TSW)
The Rock gets an enormous pop as he enters the arena and the roof nearly blows off the building!  The Rock grabs the mic ‘FINALLY . . . THE ROCK . . . HAS COME BACK . . . HOME!!!!’  Rock cuts a promo on how he was the best damn world heavyweight champion there ever was, and once he finishes laying the smack down on 63 other jabroni’s the Rock will become the ‘People’s King’!  And the Rock will go on to Wrestlemania to become the World Heavyweight champion!  IF YA SMEEEEEELLLLLL . . . Davey Boy attacks the Rock from behind and gains the early advantage as the match starts.  Rock fights back with a flying clothesline and a DDT, then locks on the Sharpshooter.  Davey counters with a clothesline and then a delayed vertical suplex, but Rock gets out of the running powerslam and hits a spinebuster!  The elbow pad comes off and into the crowd . . . PEOPLE’S ELBOW!!!!  Davey Boy kicks out at 2, but Rock catches him in a Rock Bottom to finally put him away for the 3 count!

Rock climbs the ropes and celebrates in front of his hometown fans.

AJ Styles is interviewed about his 2nd round matchup against Yuji Nagata.  AJ puts over Nagata and is looking forward to the challenge in the next round.

(1) Sheamus O’Shuanessy (XWA) def. (16) Yokozuna (FA)
Yokozuna comes out and is greeted by the Rock in the ring.  They embrace and Rock leaves as Sheamus’ music hits.  Sheamus comes out and passes Rock in the isle as he is leaving, and the 2 stop and have a staredown in the isle.  Finally, Sheamus just walks past the Rock and gets in the ring, where Yoko attacks him before the bell even rings!  Sheamus takes a beating, but he dodges an avalanche in the corner and then nails Yoko with a series of clotheslines.  Yoko won’t go down, but Sheamus hits the Celtic War Sword and finally takes the big man off his feet.  Sheamus goes up top and tries a double axe handle, but Yoko catches him and hits a belly to belly.  Yoko drops the huge leg on Sheamus and makes the cover.  1 . . . 2 . . . NOOOO!  Sheamus kicks out!  Yoko drags him to the corner and goes for the banzai drop, but Sheamus is up!  Pump kick to the back of the head!!!!  Yoko slumps on the top rope, and Sheamus grabs the arms and falls forward, hitting a crucifix power bomb from the 2nd rope!  The rings shakes, and Sheamus slowly crawls over and lays an arm over Yoko for the 1 . . . 2 . . . 3!!!!  Sheamus survives!!!!
