King of the Ring Round 2: The Mid West Region (from Chicago, Illinois) KoR

THE MID WEST REGIONAL – ROUND 2
Live from the All State Arena in Chicago, Illinois

The opening promo starts out in black and white with video of the Great Fire of Chicago in 1871.  This morphs into a shot of the city as it stands today, and above the skline we see images of Walter Payton breaking a long run, Brian Urlacher sacking Brett Favre, Sammy Sosa hitting a home run, and Micheal Jordan dunking over Isaiah Thomas.  The images lead into shots of Dusty Rhodes hitting the Flip, Flop and Fly, The Andersons taunting the crowd, and other UWF stars.  This goes right into the King of the Ring promo.

The camera comes up on the rowdy crowd as we go to ringside with Gordon Solie and Bob Caudle.

Gordon Solie: Hello Chicago and welcome to All State Arena, welcome to the King of the Ring tournament!  We here at BTPW we are proud to be the host site for the second round, and Bob, it should be a great show.’

Bob Caudle: That’s right Gordon.  In addition to the 2nd round tournament matches, we also have some other big matches lined up, including 2 huge UWF world title matches and a match for the BTPW Heartland tag titles!  But first fans, it is my pleasure to introduce to you the UWF World Heavyweight champion . . . ‘Ravishing’ Rick Rude!

King of the Ring Round 2: The Mid West Region (from Chicago, Illinois) Rude . . . . King of the Ring Round 2: The Mid West Region (from Chicago, Illinois) Maryse-1-1

Out comes Rick Rude along with his manager Maryse, and they receive a mixed reaction from the crowd.

Gordon: "Welcome Mr. Rude.  The first round of the King of the Ring is now in the books, and the field is down to 32 wrestlers. After tonight, we are going to find out the first four men to make it to the Sweet 16.’

Rick Rude: "Well like you said little man, we are only down to 32 left, but dont think for one minute that "The Ravishing One" isnt watching every single match. Any one of these guys could be the man to win this and head into Wrestlemania and try and step up and take this World title."

Gordon: "If we may champ, please give us your thoughts on the tournament thus far as the individual regions are concerned.’

Rude: "Well simpleton, it doesn’t really matter who wins this thing, because the Ravishing one is going to stand tall as the UWF champion for a long time to come.  First off you have the West Region, and a lot of what I am hearing says that this one is the best. You got 2 guys like Curt Hennig and CM Punk, but then you have the crazy men like Cactus, Raven, and Brody.  My money would be on Punk or Hennig.  But like I said, it doesn’t matter.

Gordon: "Some say that the biggest threat to your title could come out of the South in the form of Sheamus, a man that has been close on more than one occasion. And the Mid West has 2 former world champions in it.’

Rude: Sheamus is a joke.  That is why he has only come close to this right here.  He can’t get the job done.  Still, I would have to pick him over any of these other guys in the South.  And as far as right here in the Mid West you may have 2 former world champs, but you can have all the experience in the World and it still won’t substitute for someone that is more hungry than you are.  Someone I might be watching in this region is my personal favorite . . . Dusty's Blotch!!’

Gordon: "In all seriousness champ, we’ve got one region left and that is the East, which we have just found out has been moved from Charlotte, North Carolina to Philadelphia.  Someone in this region to keep an eye on is obviously former World Heavyweight Champion Maxx Payne.’

Rude – ‘Well, there’s a reason why we call Maxx Payne, the former World Champion, now isn’t there little man? This to me is the toughest Region of the whole tournament and the way I see it, I think the winner will come from here.  Who will that be?  Like I said, it doesn’t matter.’

Gordon: "Well champ, it’s about time for our opening match of round two, but we would like to thank you for your time and great input."

Rude: "The pleasure is all yours simpleton! But what I would like to have right now is for each and every man left in this tournament, to keep the noise down, and sit back while "Ravishing" Rick Rude shows them all what a real World Champion exactly looks like!!!"

(Rude's manager Maryse moves in and removes Rudes robe while Rude gives us a double bicep pose)

Gordon: ‘Fans, we’ll be right back with our first match of the night.’

BREAK

Chicago Extreme Title: Joey Ryan vs The Cobra
Cobra attacks Ryan as he is coming down the ramp and slams him against guard rail.  Vertical Suplex on the floor by Cobra!  Cobra rolls in the ring as Ryan tries to get up, but Cobra hits a cross body all the way to the outside!  Cobra rolls Ryan back in and starts beating the snot out of him, and soon Ryan is split wide open!  Gordon and Bob talk about how Cobra is out for revenge on what Ryan did to him last week. Cobra goes to the top again and tries a splash, but Ryan gets the knees up this time.  Joey pounds Cobra, then goes right after the mask!!!!  Ryan pulls something out of his tights, then starts carving up Cobra’s head and very soon he is busted open as well!!!!  A swinging reverse neck breaker gets a close 2, and Ryan starts complaining to the ref.  Cobra leaps to his feet and takes drops Ryan with a leaping spinning back kick.  Cobra climbs to the top and hits the splash, but suddenly out of nowhere a woman jumps up on the ring apron and distracts the ref!  The fans count to 15, but the ref is distracted.  From the other side, Buddy Rose slides in and pulls Cobra up and plants a kiss on him, then drops him with the KOD. (Rocker Dropper for you newbies) He pulls Ryan on top of Cobra and then the woman, who Caudle has revealed as Faby Apache gets down. The ref turns and counts 1 . . . 2 . . . 3!

Bob Luce: Fans here is the time 10 minutes and 1 second, your winner and new Chicago Extreme Champion Joey Ryan.

Gordon: It appears that Faby Apache is back with Sleeze International.  This could spell bad news for all of BTPW.

King of the Ring Round 2: (3) DEAN MALENKO (IWL)  vs. (11) MR. WRESTLING II (PWUSA)
This one is a technical masterpiece, with both men spending a lot of time on the mat and exchanging holds and reversals.  Malenko actually proves to be the quicker of the 2, and this leads to him getting the advantage after a stalemate in the first few minutes.  Malenko strikes with a quick drop kick to the left knee of II, allowing Malenko to work the former world champion over.  Gordon comments that Malenko is working on the leg that II uses to plant with when delivering the knee lift, which could cause him to not be able to execute the move later on.  Malenko works the knee, but II fires back with chops that stagger the former Junior champ.  II battles back, but it is obvious that his knee is hurting and he is visibly limping.  II back drops Malenko off the ropes, then manages to hit a drop kick but it ends up hurting him too.  Malenko tries to shake off the cob webs, but II is back up as well, and he rolls him up from behind for a 2.  II sits Malenko on top and is going to go for a super-plex, but Malenko fights it off and hits a fireman carry gutbuster from the top rope!  Both men are down and now Malenko is holding his knee!  Malenko is up first and locks the figure four on II, but the fans rally behind II and will him to reverse the hold!  Now the pressure is on Malenko, but he makes it to the ropes to break it.  II is up, and he levels Malenko with a thunderous knee lift!!!!  II makes the cover for the 1 . . . 2 . . . NOOOOOO!  Malneko is barely able to put his foot on the ropes!  II pleads with the ref, but it is no use.  He sets to hit the move again, but Malenko catches him coming in with a chop to the knee!  CLOVERLEAF BY MALENKO!  II fights, but cannot escape the hold.  He crawls his way to the ropes, and finally breaks it.  Malenko charges but runs into a back elbow.  II goes for the knee lift again but Malenko dodges and turns it into a backslide!!!!  1 . . . 2 . . . MALENKO HAS HIS FEET ON THE ROPES . . . 3!!!!

Malenko quickly bails out, while II immediately pleads with the ref.  It is no use though, and Malenko becomes the first man to make it to the Sweet 16.

IN THE BACK: Malenko cuts a promo as he comes through the curtain, saying he just showed the world who the real ‘Mr. Wrestling’ is.  He dominated the Junior Heavyweight division, and he will do the same with the world title once he gets his chance.

King of the Ring Round 2: (2) ‘King’ Ripper Collins (HIP) vs. (10) HULK HOGAN (PWUSA)
Hogan hits the ring and rips his shirt off to the delight of the crowd.  They lock up and Hogan backs Collins into the corner, but Collins responds with a rake to the eyes and he hammers Hogan with clubbing blows to the back!  Hogan blocks a right hand and fires back with some rights of his own, then tosses Collins into the ropes and elevates him.  Collins takes a couple of clotheslines and bails out to discuss the matter with his manager, but Hogan follows him out and rams their heads together!  Hogan tosses Collins back in, but Ripper cuts him off and drops some elbows to the back of the head.  Collins gets a hard kick to the side of the head of Hulk, then locks on a Boston Crab.  Hogan looks out of it, but the fans rally and he ‘Hulks Up’ and fights out of it.  Collins cuts off the momentum and hits a stomach breaker on Hogan, but Hogan powers out of the pin and starts to ‘Hulk Up’ again.  Ripper pours on the punishment, but Hogan starts shaking violently.  YOU!!!!  Hogan shakes the finger at Collins, then blocks the right hand and fires back with 3 of his own.  Hogan goes for the whip but Collins reverses, only to have Hogan fire off with the Axe Bomber clothesline.  Hogan slams Ripper and hits the ropes, but Beauregarde grabs his leg!  Hogan grabs him and pulls him on the apron, then decks him with the right hand!  Meanwhile, Collins is digging in his tights for something, and when Hogan turns around he gets a face-full of powder!  Hogan is blinded, allowing Collins to strike with the jumping DDT!  1 . . . 2 . . . 3!!!!  Collins advances!

Caudle:  ‘What an exciting start to then King of the Ring tournament Gordon!  Malenko and Collins become the first 2 to make it to the Sweet 16 round.  But coming up, we still have Dusty Rhodes vs. Edge and Steve Austin vs. Jim Duggan!’

BREAK

Heartland Tag Team Titles: The Russian Nighmares ( Nikita Koloff and Krusher Krushev) vs Sgt. Slaughter and Dick Murdoch
Uncle Ivan accompanies Nikita and Krusher to the ring, but Sarge and Murdoch bring out the Heartland Heavyweight Champion, Dusty Rhodes, to be in their corner!  The fans explode, and the Russians are beside themselves. Nikita snaps and attacks Murdoch at the bell, nailing him from behind and kicking him while he is down.  Nikita hits a big chokeslam and covers for the 1 . . . 2 . . . but Murdoch gets his foot on the ropes.  Krusher comes in and presses Murdoch and drops him stomach first on the top turnbuckle!  Murdoch is hung on the top and Krusher kicks him off to the floor.  Ivan tries to come over, but Dusty is quick to cut him off.  Murdoch beats the count in just before 10, and Krusher rewards him with a brutal double axe handle across the back.  Ivan orders Krusher to apply a Bearhug, and Murdoch fades fast. The arm drops once, twice, NOOOOO! Murdoch makes a fist and unloads into the top of Krusher's head, causing some separation in the hold.  Murdoch drops Krusher with a DDT out of nowhere!  Hot tag to Sarge, who levels Krusher with a big clothesline as he gets up and then hits a big body slam followed by a step-over toehold.

For the next five minutes Sarge and Murdoch look like a well oiled machine, cutting the ring in half and working Krusher's leg. The fans go nuts when Murdoch comes in and puts on a Scorpoin Deathlock and it looks as though Krusher is going to tap.  Nikita tries to get in the ring but the ref stops him, allowing Ivan to reach in and put Krusher's hand across the bottom rope.  Ivan turns around and gets dropped by a Bionic Elbow!  Dusty daces and shakes a finger at Nikita, and Nikita is beside himself. He goes after Dusty, while Sarge and Murdoch hit a double Brain Buster on Krusher!  Ivan is back up and grabs the chain, then bashes Sarge in the back of the head with it. He goes to the 2nd rope and brings the chain down across the back of Murdoch’s head, breaking up the pin.  Ivan rolls to the outside and gets in the face of his nephew, slapping him and telling him to forget about Dusty and get back in the ring. Krusher is up and he tags in Nikita, who nearly takes Murdoch’s head off with the Russian Sickle!!!!  Nikita makes the cover and gets the 1 . . . 2 . . . 3!!!!

Bob Luce: Fans here is the time 17 minutes and 56 seconds your winners and new Heartland Tag Team Champions "The Russian Nightmares"!!!!!

Gordon: Well, the Russians have won the battle but something tells me that the war is far from over.

Bob: As long as Sgt. Slaughter, Dick Murdoch and Dusty Rhodes have life in their bodies, then yes this war is far from over.  Up next fans, we have another huge King of the Ring matchup!’

King of the Ring Round 2: (4) ‘Stone Cold’ STEVE AUSTIN (XWA) vs. (5) ‘Hacksaw’ JIM DUGGAN (FWA)
Both men start out in the center of the ring jawing.  Duggan puts his hands on his hips and then sticks his thumb in the air, letting out a big ‘Hooooooo!’  Austin responds by flipping Duggan the double bird, which gets a right hand in response from Duggan.  Duggan hammer Austin back into the ropes, but Austin reverses the whip and catches him with a back elbow.  Austin drapes Duggan over the 2nd rope and then hits the body guillotine that drives his throat across the ropes.  Duggan is hurt and Austin gives him the mudhole stomping in the corner.  He goes to whip Duggan off, but Duggan sends Austin into the corner and elevates him.  Austin takes a big clothesline from Duggan, then a series of body slams.  Duggan hits the ropes and drives the big knee to Austin’s chest, but Austin kicks out at 2.  Austin reverses a whip and locks Duggan in a sleeper, and Hacksaw starts to fade out.  Just when it looks like he might go out, Duggan fights back to his feet and shoots Austin off the ropes, but both men collide head to head in the center of the ring.  They lay there for a moment before getting to their feet at the same time, and they start trading blows.  Austin reverses another whip and catches Duggan with the Thesz Press, but Duggan holds on and turns it into a back drop.  Duggan sets in the 3 point stance, but as he charges Austin catches him with a kick to the gut.  He goes for the stunner but Duggan shoves him off right into the ref.  Duggan rolls up Austin from behind and has him pinned, but the ref is down.  Duggan tries to revive him, but turns around right into a stunner by Austin!!!!  Austin sees the ref down and he removes the turnbuckle pad from the top turnbuckle!  Duggan blocks his attempt to ram him into it, and Austin goes head-first into the buckle instead!  Duggan goes and revives the ref, then sets in the 3 point stance again as a woozy Austin gets up.  Duggan charges, but Austin dodges at the last second and Duggan crashes into the unprotected turnbuckle!  Austin spins him around and kicks him in the gut . . . a 2nd STUNNER BY AUSTIN!!!!  Austin hooks the leg, and the ref crawls over and counts the 1 . . . 2 . . . 3!

Austin pops the top on a couple of beers and celebrates moving on to the round of 16.

BREAK

UWF World Six Man Tag Team Titles: The Fabulous Freebirds (C) vs The Minnesota Wrecking Crew
This one gets ugly right away as Hayes and Ole start.  They tear into each other and throw some wild punches, but Hayes rakes the eyes and then slams Ole's head into the turnbuckles. He tags off to Gordy, who fires several big punches to Ole's head and then whips him off the ropes and catches him with a huge back body drop. Gordy drops a couple of big elbows and gets a 2, but Heenan puts Ole's foot on the bottom rope. Hayes starts screaming at the ref, but the ref claims he didn't see it. Gordy rains down heavy handed punches and tags in Garvin, who comes in and puts Ole into a spinning toe hold and then drops down with a front step over ankle lock. Ole squirms, but his short little arms can't get to the ropes. Heenan though reaches in and helps him. Heenan quickly points out Ole grasping the ropes and the ref orders the break. Now Garvin is yelling at Heenan and that is his mistake because Ole, knees Garvin right in the kidneys and then hits a back breaker. Gene comes in and puts on kind of a makeshift surfboard on Garvin. Garvin gets to the ropes, but Gene drops a quick knee to the back of Garvin and then hits a huge series of elbow drops.  He hits a back breaker and then tags in Lars, who comes off the second rope with a huge knee drop.  Lars hits over the head belly to belly suplex and locks on a Boston Crab. Garvin gets to the ropes to break the hold, but Lars keeps up the punishment.  Ole comes in and hits another back breaker on Garvin, then hits a gut wrench suplex.  Hayes actually starts to rally some of the fans at ringside, and Garvin manages to push Ole away with both feet then fires off a dropkick!  Garvin leaps and makes the tag to Hayes, who comes in and nails a DDT on Ole.  Heenan tries to interfere again, but this time Gordy goes out to the floor and decks him with a clothesline!  Gene and Lars rush to Heenan's aid, while in the ring Hayes nails a Bulldog on Ole. The ref turns around . . . 1 . . . 2 . . . NOOOO!  Hayes tosses Ole outside, and Garvin nails a DDT on the floor!  The ref is on the opposite side trying to break up the mele going on between Gordy, Gene, and Lars and doesn’t see this, and Garvin rolls Ole back in.  Hayes hits a piledriver and makes the cover, and the ref turns around to see Hayes with the cover and counts the 1 . . . 2 . . . 3!

Bob Luce: Fans here is the time 12 minutes and 22 seconds, your winners and still UWF World Six Man Tag Team Champions, The Fabulous Freebirds.

Gordon: Bob, what a match, I don't think this one is over by a longshot however.

Bob: No Gordon, I think if anything, the way that match ended will make the Andersons even more determined Gordon.’

Gordon: Indeed.  Well, now fans it is time for our final King of the Ring match of the night, and this one has a built a lot of bad blood in a short amount of time.  It will be Dusty Rhodes, the Heartland Heavyweight Champion and No. 1 seed taking on Edge.

A video recap is shown of what has happened between Edge and Dusty

King of the Ring Round 2: (1) DUSTY RHODES (BTPW) vs. (9) EDGE (RWA)
Dusty plays to the crowd big time as the match starts, dancing around the ring.  He goes to lock up, but flashes Edge the elbow forcing him to back away.  He does this a few more times, and a frustrated Edge bails out to confer with Storm on the outside.  He slides back in and they lock up, but Dusty snaps off an arm drag and then flashes the elbow again.  Another lock up, and Edge forces Dusty back and then unloads with rights.  Dusty reverses a whip and hip tosses Edge to the mat, then hits a drop kick!!!!  Dusty hits a vertical suplex for a 2, then locks in a head lock.  Edge tosses him into the ropes and takes a shoulder block, but Storm tries to trip Dusty as hits the ropes.  Dusty takes a swipe at Storm, but this gives Edge the chance to catch Dusty from behind with the Edge-o-matic.  Edge gets on top, pounding Dusty with rights.  He lets him up, only to take him down again with a big clothesline.  Edge goes up top, then nails Dusty with a missile drop kick as he gets up.  Edge gets a 2, then locks on a chinlock.  Dusty fades, but the fans start clapping and Dusty starts moving his arm along with the beat.  He fights out, dropping Edge with a back suplex!  Both men to their feet and Dusty blocks a right hand and lays in some jabs, followed by the flip, flop and fly!  Dusty hits a DDT on Edge, but Storm reaches in and puts his partners foot on the ropes!  Dusty goes out after Storm and decks him with a bionic elbow, but when he rolls into the ring he gets hit by a spear from Edge!!!!  Cover for the 1 . . . 2 . . . NOOOOO!  Dusty gets his foot on the ropes this time.  Edge squats to go for it again, but this time when he charges Dusty leaps over him and Edge crashes face-first into the turnbuckle!  Dusty goes for a bulldog, but Edge shoves him off into the ref and the ref goes down!  Dusty slams Edge and drops the big bionic elbow but there is no one to make the count.  Storm is back in, and Dusty turns around right into a super kick!!!!  Storm lays Edge on top and tosses the ref back in the ring, but he is still down.  Edge is up and goes for the spear on Dusty again, but misses and takes Storm out!  DDT by Dusty!!!!  He makes the cover and the ref slowly rolls over and counts 1 . . . 2 . . . DING DING DING!!!!  What????

The fans immediately start booing, but Dusty raises his hand like he won the match.  There is a state of confusion in the ring as the ref and the ring announce converse, and Bob Luce comes on and announces that the match has gone to the time limit!  Thus the match is going to be ruled a draw!  No one is happy with this decision, and Storm helps Edge from the ring as Dusty stands inside still ready for a fight.

BREAK

Gordon: Fans we are back here and the crowd is still buzzing over that last match.’

Bob: You’re absolutely right Gordon.  With the match going to a draw, that means both Dusty Rhodes and Edge have been eliminated from the competition and Steve Austin will receive a bye into the Elite 8!

Gordon:  Not a popular move with the fans here, but Dusty Rhodes becomes the first No. 1 seed to be eliminated from the tournament.  Well, coming up next is our main event for the UWF World Junior Heavyweight Title.  The last time these two were in the ring together they put on a great show.

UWF World Junior Heavyweight Title: Michael Shane (C) vs Dynamite Kid
The two men lock up collar and elbow, and Shane scores first with an arm drag takedown and controls Dynamite. Dynamite though works to his feet and backs Shane into the ropes. Heenan stays out of the ref's line of vision and grabs Shane's leg which allows Dynamite to unload with a knee to the gut. From there Dynamite hits an over the head belly to belly suplex on Shane. Dynamite goes to the second rope and then comes down with knee drop to the chest of Shane. Dynamite from there puts on body scissors on Shane. The fans are solidly behind Shane, they start chanting and he works up. He gets to his feet and turns the body scissors into a side belly to belly suplex. He now goes to the top rope and comes down with an elbow. He covers, but Dynamite kicks out at two. Shane now pulls Dynamite to his feet and then sets him on the top turnbuckle and then hits a huge Superplex. He covers and Heenan puts Dynamite's foot on the bottom rope. Shane has had enough of Heenan, he launches himself over the top rope with a springboard plauncha. Heenan is out cold. However Shane doesn't see Dynamite come from behind out on the floor and drops him with a reverse DDT. The ref calls for the bell. Dynamite spits on Shane and takes his leave.

Bob Luce: Fans here is the time 8 minutes and 4 seconds your winner via DQ. Michael Shane.

Gordon: Well nothing settled in that one.

Bob: No that's for sure however, I think Dynamite made a huge statement tonight, that he will do anything to win the World Junior Heavyweight Title.

Gordon: Now Bobby Heenan is up and he shoving his finger in Michael Shane's chest. That could be a mistake.

Heenan takes a swing at Shane, but Shane dodges and then slaps on the sleeper!  Heenan fades fast, and out comes the Andersons , Kabuki and Dynamite to stop this.  However, they are met by Tommy Rich and the Freebirds!  The Company smartly retreats, and Hayes pulls out a pair of clippers and hands them to Shane, who now shaves the head of Bobby Heenan.

Gordon: Oh brother, Mr. Heenan is not going to be happy about this at all.

Bob: Gordon, here comes the Company again and this time Greg Valentine is with them and they are armed with chairs.

Gordon: Yes, but the damage has been done I'm afraid.
